This post is a part of a weekend trip to the UAE in February 2012. We attended a conference-seminar in Dubai and spent the rest of our stay sightseeing. The weather was perfect for the outdoors, bright and sunny with cool breezes (tail end of winter season). Part of our “Capital Adventure” was a visit to Manarat Al Saadiyat.
Manarat Al Saadiyat literally means ‘the place of enlightenment’. It is a 15,400 sqm visitor centre, designed to bring the vision of the island to life through the Saadiyat Story.
Located just 500 metres off the coast of Abu Dhabi, this artistic venue houses TDIC exhibitions with international collections from around the world, including three major galleries, a central events gallery, sales centre, 250-seat theatre, and restaurant.
The main galleries constitute of permanent spaces for a series of exhibitions as part of an ongoing cultural programme dedicated to developing awareness and understanding of art and culture prior to the launch of the Saadiyat Cultural District.
The Saadiyat Cultural District is the region’s biggest arts hub. It includes Zayed National Museum, Guggenheim Abu Dhabi, Louvre Abu Dhabi and Performing Arts Centre.

The exhibit “Saadiyat Story” is an interactive experience centre which brings alive the historical and cultural vision behind Saadiyat Island as well as its future plans.
Visitors will find a rich educational experience for all, especially for families looking for a fun, weekend activity. Here they will learn more through virtual ‘books’. LCD screens display the pages of electronic books – using a first-ever technology in the Middle East, which respond with a gesture recognition sensor system by simply waving a hand over the image of the book.
The design of the exhibition has adopted an interactive approach to engage with visitors, with a carefully balanced mix of audio-visual media including large-scale AV, graphics, physical and touchscreen interactives, spread across the nine chapters.
Inspired by the rich local tradition of storytelling, The Saadiyat Story is made up of nine chapters that articulate the different facets of the island’s past, present and future.
Saadiyat is undergoing a remarkable transformation. This unique place will offer an entirely unique invitation to the discerning traveller. The island is infused with a richness that serves its visitors and residents cultural, social, emotional and environmental needs.
Indeed, Saadiyat is positioned to become, a desirable international destination, a flagship for Abu Dhabi, and a treasure for the world.
